Julia May Boddewyn, one of the Modigliani Initiative’s founding directors, has published the first book on Valentine Dudensing, the founder and director of the Valentine Gallery, which operated in New York from 1926 until 1947. Part of Bloomsbury Publishing’s Contextualizing Art Markets series, The Valentine Gallery details the pioneering art dealer’s extraordinary yet forgotten role in creating the U.S. market for modern art during the first half of the twentieth century. Working with Paul Guillaume, Dudensing sold a handful of Modigliani paintings to his clientele before the Parisian dealer’s premature death in 1934. Dudensing continued to work with his widow, Domenica Guillaume, and over the years he displayed and sold a number of the exceptional works that her late husband had carefully selected. Their collaboration resulted in the Modigliani exhibition at the Valentine Gallery in January 1940, which featured eleven paintings from the Guillaume collection.
