It has been an exciting year so far for the Modigliani Initiative! Last fall, our nonprofit organization received official 501(c)(3) status. We have entered a new phase in which we will start to seek funding opportunities in order to expand the scale and scope of our mission.

In an effort to raise the visibility of the Initiative, we presented at the annual conference of the College Art Association (CAA) in Chicago on a panel organized by the Catalogue Raisonné Scholars Association (CRSA). More recently, we were honored to be included on a distinguished panel on provenance research in an event organized by Gallagher Fine Arts in conjunction with AXA/XL in New York. On our website, we published several ground-breaking essays, identifying Modigliani’s models, taking a closer look at an early and important exhibition, and studying how Modigliani’s death affected his market. You will find the links to these below:

Renée Modot: Hiding in Plain Sight Merely 24 years old at the time, Modot has now been identified as the beguiling model who posed for one of Modigliani’s nudes in 1918. Read the essay here.

New Publication

Becoming Modigliani, a recent publication, sheds new light on the artist’s chronic illnesses and addictions and offers thought-provoking theories on how these may have affected Modigliani’s life and work. Dr. Henri Colt is emeritus professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of California.

Also of interest

The Parisian studio where Amedeo Modigliani and Paul Gauguin and other artists once lived and worked has received a historical designation ahead of a major renovation. Atelier 11, located on Cité Falguière and constructed in the 1860s, has not been renovated since the end of the 19th century. In October 2023, the nonprofit organization L’AiR Arts and another nonprofit using the Cité Falguière name, with assistance from the Fondation du Patrimoine, launched a campaign to raise funds for repairs. On May 15th, a plaque was unveiled at the atelier, celebrating its heritage designation as a site of significant architectural and historical value. More information can be found here.
