The Modigliani Initiative is closing the year with an exciting new Spotlight essay that introduces Gabrielle “Gaby” Soëne and offers a novel theory that she was the model for the above painting. You will find a link to the story here. After a productive fall, during which our Initiative was featured in an article published by ARTnews (see details below), we are looking forward to speaking about our work at ICRA’s Annual Conference early next year (registration details follow). The Modigliani Initiative was thrilled to be featured in “Have You Seen These Missing Artworks?,” an essay by Karen Chernick that was recently published by ARTnews. Our research revealed that this presumed portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne has not been seen publicly since it was sold by Galerie Bernheim-Jeune in Paris in 1922. A link to the article can be found here.

Modigliani/Zadkine. An Interrupted Friendship is now on view through March 30, 2025, at the Zadkine Museum in Paris. Featuring over 90 works, the show examines the friendship and artistic exchange between the sculptor Ossip Zadkine (1888–1967) and Modigliani (1884–1920), whose lives ultimately went in very different directions. The Palazzo Citterio, Milan’s new museum for modern and contemporary art was inaugurated on December 7th. It is part of the “Grande Brera,” a new cultural complex under the direction of the Pinacoteca di Brera, which also includes the Braidense National Library. The Palazzo Citterio offers expanded exhibition spaces for the museum’s impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, which includes five paintings by Modigliani. This standing nude, formerly in the collection of Dr. Paul Alexandre, was sold at Sotheby’s, New York, on November 19th. Between 1907 and 1914, Alexandre was one of the artist’s most important supporters. He assembled a large number of drawings, which are marked with his collector’s stamp and inventory number.
