“Première Exposition,”

In the Spotlight this month is “Première Exposition,” the 1916 happening of art, music, and poetry held in artist Émile Lejeune’s Paris studio, which was known as Lyre et Palette. Thanks to his friend Moïse Kisling, who helped organize the event, Modigliani was represented by fourteen paintings, the largest number of works by any of the artists in the group show. His outsized presence at Lyre et Palette and inclusion in other prestigious shows that year put Modigliani at the center of the Parisian avant-garde. Read the story here.

Amedeo Modigliani:
A Painter and His Art Dealer

The Musée de l’Orangerie, Paris, recently opened their latest exhibition which explores the relationship between Modigliani and Paul Guillaume. The exhibition catalogue, with essays by Yaëlle Biro, Simonetta Fraquelli, Cécile Girardeau, and Marie-Amélie Senot, was edited by Fraquelli and Girardeau, the show’s curators. Barnes Collection Can Now Lend

There was big news for Modigliani enthusiasts when a judge ruled in July that the Barnes Collection can now lend works to exhibitions. Previously, under Dr. Barnes’s strict regulations, his collection was not allowed to travel.

The Barnes has twelve Modigliani paintings, the same number as the Chester Dale Collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. These represent the largest holdings of the artist’s canvases in public collections in the world. By coincidence, neither collection was allowed to travel.

Sotheby’s to Sell Works
from the Long Collection

Next month, Sotheby’s will offer important works from the Long Collection, including Modigliani’s portrait of Paulette Jourdain. The sale, titled A Long Journey: A Selection from the Liu Yiqian and Wang Wei Collection, will take place on October 5, 2023, in Hong Kong.
