The Modigliani Initiative has been having a productive fall. We are looking forward to speaking about the Initiative’s mission at ICRA’s Annual Conference early next year (details below). We were also excited to see one of our essays, previously published on our website, referenced in a recent New York Times article. Modigliani and his work continue to be highlighted around the world, and we are preparing to unveil our latest in-depth research into an elusive model in an essay that we’ll share in next month’s newsletter. ICRA Annual Conference:

The Modigliani Initiative was honored to have our essay on the 1917 Galerie B. Weill exhibition linked to Hilarie M. Sheets’ New York Times review of the current Make Way for Berthe Weill exhibition at the Grey Art Museum. Picasso, Modigliani & Modern Art

Viking Eggeling, 1916. Lille Métropole Musée d'art moderne, d'art contemporain et d'art brut, Villeneuve-d'Ascq, France

Picasso, Modigliani & Modern Art: Masterpieces from LaM Museum is now on view through February 9, 2025 at the Bund One Art Museum in Shanghai. This is the first collaboration between the Shanghai museum and the LaM (Lille Métropole Museum of Modern, Contemporary and Outsider Art), in Villeneuve d’Ascq, France. The show features nine works by Modigliani including Viking Eggeling, 1916, (above). An informative video presentation of the exhibition can be accessed here.

Tête et buste d'homme de face (detail), c. 1912–1913

A Modigliani drawing from the Dr. Paul Alexandre collection was offered for sale at Artcurial in Paris on October 18. Between 1907 and 1914, Alexandre was one of the artist’s earliest supporters and assembled a large collection of the artist’s drawings. (The collector’s inventory number and stamp are visible at center right.) More information on the sale can be found here.

This is a concise yet captivating and well-researched overview of Modigliani’s life and work.
