Modigliani: In Fact

In this new feature on our social media accounts, we will regularly present a fact about the artist or his work culled from our database. Our in-depth research into archival records has provided us with a wealth of factual information that, when combined with the software’s sophisticated search function, allows us to confirm provenance details, reconstruct exhibitions, and review literature for information about works that were exhibited or sold. Since our research is ongoing, we are continuously learning new details about the artist and his paintings.

Our first post contrasts the prices achieved for two Modigliani paintings, both measuring 92 x 60 cm., sold at auction in Paris fifteen months apart. Portrait de Dédie, 1918 (above, left), sold in March 1919 for 580 francs and in June 1920, Jeune fille au corsage rayé, 1917 (above, right), sold for 2,900 francs. The reason for this price jump? The first sale took place during the artist’s lifetime, while the second was held five months after his death.
