We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Amedeo Modigliani Digital Catalogue! The AMDC is the first searchable online catalogue of Modigliani’s paintings and is freely accessible to all. It is not a catalogue raisonné rather it is intended as a scholarly resource, representing in-depth, fact-based research into the artist’s life and circle, providing a greater understanding of his artwork. The foundation on which this endeavor is based is the 1970 Modigliani catalogue by the Italian scholar Ambrogio Ceroni (1907–1970), whose sudden passing shortly after publication left his ongoing investigation into the artist’s work incomplete. Building upon Ceroni’s widely accepted reference, this digital catalogue-in-progress features high-resolution images of the artworks and supplements the provenance, exhibition history, and literature references for each painting with biographies of the models and newly discovered technical details about the canvases where available. This first phase of the catalogue presents paintings in public institutions in the United States that were published in Ceroni's catalogue and will be followed by further installments, expanding not only to other geographical regions but also to include paintings that were not published in Ceroni’s catalogue, but that have confirmed references to the artist’s lifetime. It is the aim of the Modigliani Initiative that this catalogue will serve as a valuable resource for scholars, researchers, and general audiences. As our research continues to evolve, the catalogue will be updated on a regular basis to reflect new findings and discoveries as they emerge. Access the AMDC here.
