Modigliani: Modern Gazes

Modigliani: Moderne Blicke has opened at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. With a focus on how the artist depicted the modern woman, this exhibition compares Modigliani’s portraits and nudes to those by artists working in German-speaking countries at the same time.

Comprised of over 80 works, the show is on view in Stuttgart until March 17, 2024. It then travels to the Museum Barberini, Potsdam (April 27–August 18, 2024).

Modigliani and the Parisian Art Market (1900–1939)

In conjunction with Amedeo Modigliani. A painter and his dealer, the exhibition currently on view at the Musée de l’Orangerie (until January 15, 2024), the Musée d’Orsay is hosting a study day on December 1, 2023. Experts in artistic exchanges and historians of the avant-garde will explore Modigliani’s œuvre and the non-Western artwork that inspired him. Presenters will also discuss the key figures of the Parisian art market who built the artist’s reputation. This event is in person only. Here is the link.

Unpacking Modigliani: Discovering the Travels of Portrait de Femme

On Tuesday, December 5, 2023 (6–7pm MST), Renée Stokesbury, Associate Provenance Researcher at the Denver Art Museum, will give a talk on the provenance of Modigliani’s Portrait de femme in the museum collection. From Paris to New York to Ohio to Denver, the journey of this small canvas via art dealers and collectors offers a fascinating case study in provenance research.

The Musée de l’Orangerie recently announced that it has received seventeen photograph albums of the inventory of the art dealer Paul Guillaume. Acquired by Marc and Sébastien Blondeau through the Société des Amis des Musées d'Orsay et de l'Orangerie, these albums will be an invaluable addition to the museum’s archival holdings.
